Find the right Indiana marriage record—and know when the online lookup is not enough
Indiana provides a statewide public lookup for many marriage-license records from 1993 to the present. It can help you identify a possible record, marriage date, license number and issuing clerk.
The lookup is not a downloadable certified certificate. When you need official proof, a correction or confirmation that the marriage was recorded, contact the Circuit Court Clerk in the county that issued the license.
Start with the statewide lookup for recent records, but use the issuing county for official proof

How to search Indiana marriage-license records by name
Begin with a broad search. Too many uncertain filters can hide the correct record instead of helping you find it.
Example: searching a common name when the marriage year is uncertain
Search in this order
- Search the last name Johnson without a year or county.
- Add Michael if the list is too large.
- Add the 2004-2008 year range.
- Try Marion County, then Hamilton County, only if needed.
- Compare the second applicant, date, license number and officiant.
Do not identify an Indiana marriage record from one matching name
Common names, spelling errors and incomplete index data can produce misleading matches. Compare several details before deciding that a result belongs to the person you are researching.
Confirm the other applicant. One matching surname is not enough.
Make sure the date is reasonably consistent with what you already know.

Important limits of State Form 54764
State Form 54764 currently limits IDOH certified-record searches to marriages from 1958 through 2012. Records outside that range should be requested from the Clerk of Courts where the marriage was filed.
The form lists an $8 non-refundable search fee for each marriage date provided. The fee includes one certified copy if the record is found. The current revision estimates approximately six to eight weeks for processing.
Review the current identification, eligibility, payment and mailing instructions on the official form. An incomplete request may be returned or delayed.
What to say when contacting an Indiana county clerk
Give the clerk enough detail to identify the record, but do not send Social Security numbers or unrelated personal information unless the official office specifically requires it through a secure method.
